Bata India’s 2008 turnover exceeded Rs10 billion ($212 million) in 2008, according to a presentation given at the company’s AGM held last week by chairman Mr P Sinha.

Turnover for the year was Rs10.1 billion compared with Rs8.908 billion in 2007, representing growth of around 40%. According to the company, this increase is down to higher sales, a better gross margin and from strict control over costs.

Mr Sinha said the company is looking to enter the defence sector by providing safety shoes for the military and paramilitary sector. It already makes safety shoes for the construction industry. It recently purchased two new machines for its Batanagar factory which will be used to produce safety shoes.
