Colombia’s national administrative department of statistics (DANE) has reported that retail sales in the South American country fell in the first quarter of the year and that the employment situation has suffered as a result.

Sales levels fell by 5.2% compared to the first quarter of 2008 and the numbers of Colombians in work was down by 1.6%. In the month of March alone, the drop in retail sales was even higher at 7.1%, and employment levels were 2.3% down compared to March last year.

However, while automotive, alcohol and tobacco were among the sectors to have suffered most, the authorities reported more positive results for a small number of consumer product sectors, including leathergoods and footwear.
