Painted lasts could raise thousands

The Rotary Club in the town of Inca on the island of Mallorca has organised an unusual fundraising event based on the town’s most traditional industry, shoemaking.
To raise funds to keep a subsidised diner going, the club asked a series of artists to paint a last and donate it for the Rotary Club to sell.
Club secretary, and former president of the regional government, Cristòfol Soler, explained on announcing the idea: “Footwear is Inca’s traditional industry, so we thought it would be a good idea to tie that in with this art project.”
The club’s president, Macià Tugores, added: “We’re going to put the lasts on display in an exhibition and hope that people will buy one for EUR 100.”
The exhibition opens on May 15 and the club has set itself a target of raising EUR 7,000 or 8,000 from the project. Mr Soler said: “Our plan this year was to fund projects for children, but owing to the exceptional [economic] situation we’re living through, we took the decision to help with the diner instead.”
