Lower demand for Vietnamese footwear

                    Out of total Vietnamese exports of $13.5 billion for the three months from January to March 2009, the share of leather footwear and leathergoods was just over $1 billion. This compares to a figure of $1.2 billion for the same period last year, a fall of more than 11.1%, according to data released by the General Statistics Office
of Vietnam.
The breakdown showed that Vietnam exported leather footwear worth $915 million and leathergoods valued at $160 million during the first quarter of 2009, falls of 11.9% and 6.4% respectively.
The declines from the month of March are even steeper. In March alone, Vietnam exported leather footwear worth $260 million and leathergoods with a value of $50 million, dowturns of 21% and 16.7% compared to last year.
