Footwear a bright spot for Bangladesh
12/05/2009
Bangladesh’s total leather sector exports showed a decline of 12.7% at $296.7 million for the first nine months of the current fiscal year, which runs from July to June. The total for the corresponding nine-month period last year was $340 million.
Industry commentators in Bangladesh have said the fall is down to a decline in exports of finished leather. Exports for this segment fell by 34.6% to $139.21 million in the July-March period.
However, on positive note, Bangladesh exported
leather footwear worth $144.7 million, up by almost 20% from from $120.7 million from the
corresponding period last year.
Bangladesh has set a high export target—$526.10 million compared to $462.8 million—for the leather sector this financial year.
