Italy earthquake claims lives and homes

07/04/2009

A devastating earthquake struck in central Italy in the early hours of April 6. Reports suggest that more than 200 people have been killed, while many more are still missing.

Officials in L’Aquila, where the earthquake struck, and surrounding areas believe the death toll could continue to climb dramatically, although rescue teams are doing all they can to free people from the rubble. Around 100 people are said to have been rescued so far.

Mayor Massimo Cialente said on Monday that approximately 100,000 people had been forced to leave their homes. Many local businesses, including leather and footwear companies, will also have been affected by the quake.

Italian president, Silvio Berlusconi, has declared a state of emergency and has cancelled a visit to Russia in order to visit the mountainous region.

Our thoughts are with all those affected by this terrible earthquake.
