Government scheme to help children and shoemakers

06/04/2009

A government scheme in Ghana was recently introduced stating that 1.6 million Ghanaian children would receive a free school uniform. However, reports indicate that the government did not mention that the scheme is also likely to include a free pair of shoes for these children.

Not only will this benefit families who would be unable to afford shoes for their children, it could also come as a welcome surprise for local shoe manufacturers. The Gihoc shoe factory in Kumasi (a city in southern central Ghana), which has reportedly been closed for some time and is in a state of disrepair, could be reopened in order to produce these free shoes. This means the shoes could be manufactured domestically rather than being imported from other countries.
