Nike puts outsource footwear partners on notice

25/03/2009

Sports brand Nike has given three outsource footwear manufacturing partners in China and one in Vietnam between six and 12 months to find new clients.

The company did not specify the names of the footwear manufacturers or the locations that will be affected by the move, but its director of corporate communications, Erin Dobson, told news agencies on March 24: “We have begun notification to four factories that we will be discontinuing orders with them. The goal with giving them six to 12 months is it gives them the opportunity to seek new buyers.”

Ms Dobson explained that the move was part of a long-term consolidation of the supply chain that Nike began in mid-2007. However, she said her company had now decided that this consolidation process would have to accelerate, saying: “We are not immune to the current global economic situation and because of this we have accelerated our process.”
