Colombia to counter contraband

The president of Colombia's industry association for leather and footwear (Acicam) has said the sector will concentrate on fighting illegal imports and contraband goods in its efforts to protect member companies during the economic downturn.
Commenting on a recent industrial survey that shows Colombia's industrial output to have fallen by 4.3% overall during the month of January, Acicam president, Luis Gustavo Flórez said trade in illegal imports was the biggest factor facing the industry at the moment. He said Colombia had to work harder to control contraband products.
"Another measure we can take is to open up new markets for Colombian leathergoods and shoes, and we are working on this right now with Proexport [the national export promotions agency]," Mr Flórez added.
