Footwear plan: first payments promised
12/03/2009
The director general of Spain's labour ministry, José Luis Villar, has told the country's footwear industry that the first payments under a support package first announced in October 2007 will become available during the month of March.
Mr Villar said the Spanish government was firmly committed to the so-called Footwear Plan, which will make specialist training available to workers in the footwear industry and help employers keep workers (especially older workers) on during economically challenging times. In all, the government has promised to make €49 million available to the industry.
Mr Villar told a gathering of footwear manufacturers in Elche on March 12: "Some people have come to doubt the existence of the Footwear Plan, but the government is fully committed to taking it forward." He said the delay had mostly been caused by bureaucratic delays in securing the approval of the European Commission.
