German archaeologists have found a sandal that dates back 5,000 years.

The discovery came at a site near Lake Constance, in the south of the country, close to the border with Switzerland.

The team of
archaeologists had been working on the site of a settlement of houses built on stilts close to the lake; the sandal turned up in silt deposits.

It is made from woven strands of wood, preserved for centuries by the mud.
