Reduced VAT on leatherwork

11/03/2009

European finance ministers have agreed to lower tax rates on a list of service industry activities, including leatherworkers’ repair services to clothes, upholstery and footwear, in recognition of the skill-levels of the workers involved.

The deal has taken ten years to settle because member states have been unable to agree on which labour-intensive services ought to be included.

The minister representing the Czech Republic, which holds the presidency of the European Union at the moment, Miroslav Kalousek, said at the end of the discussions: “ We face a crisis of course, so we’re looking for instruments to foster employment.”
