End of the road for Bata in France

22/04/2016
Footwear brand Bata appears close to bringing all of its business in France to an end after 90 years.

The famous Czech footwear firm, which still produces and sells shoes in around 70 countries around the world, entered the French market in the mid-1920s, in the early days of its international expansion.

It opened a factory in Lorraine in 1930 and, at its peak, this facility employed 2,400 people. It later opened two further footwear factories in France and reached a total production capacity there of 9 million pairs a year.

By the early years of this century, all Bata production in France had ceased but, until this year, the company continued to operate 72 stores across the country. In mid-April, however, French courts approved a takeover of 47 of those stores by a seven-company consortium headed by sports retail group Go Sport.
